NOTIFICATION OF THE WORKSHOP ON BLOCKCHAIN TO BE HOSTED ON 19-20 JULY 2018 BY THE OFFICE OF DIGITAL ADVANTAGE ON BEHALF OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
The workshop is titled: “Blockchain beyond the Crypto-currencies: Creating Opportunities for Socio-Economic Development”.
Blockchain and other emerging distributed ledger technologies (DLTs) have enormous potential for applications across many sectors and business operations due to their nature as distributed ledgers that can ensure transparency, security and robustness.
The purpose of the workshop is to raise awareness and education on the Blockchain and its applications over and above the crypto-currency applications (e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin etc.); to explore potential innovations for socio-economic benefits of DLTs and Blockchain technology in areas such as public healthcare, agriculture, food safety/security, energy availability, environmental management etc., and to stimulate more academic institutions to incorporate Blockchain research and studies in their curricula.
Sixty (60) attendees from the following stakeholders are expected to participate:
- Universities (mainly Computer Science departments);
- Relevant government departments (e.g. health, agriculture, environmental affairs, rural development, and science & technology);
- Potential ICT RDI Roadmap investing partners (e.g. SOEs and some ICT private sector);
- Publicly-funded incubators with some of their startups (mLab, The Innovation Hub), and
- The CSIR.
The event forms part of the National System of Innovation (NSI) activities that are aimed at building capabilities in ICT Research Development and Innovation.
